St. Ann Parish Council Will Continue Street Feeding Programme

October 30, 2009

The Full Story

Despite financial constraints, the St. Ann Parish Council will continue to reach out to indigent persons in the parish through its street feeding programme.
Administrator for the Parish Council, Ms. Claudiah Carter, told JIS News that the Council provides a hot meal for the poor and needy on a daily basis.
“This street feeding programme started in the early 1990s when the Council, having looked at the needs of these persons on the streets, decided that instead of having them rummaging through garbage bins on a daily basis it would take on the task to feed them,” she informed, adding that through commitment, dedication and good partnerships the programme has been doing well through the years.
She informed that the Council prepares and serves approximately 25 hot meals daily, with the assistance extending to needy persons, who were not living on the streets.
“The challenge continues but what we do is try to at least have one fundraising activity for the year to help to augment the assistance that we get from the Local Government Department,” she said.
She told JIS News that the business community is very supportive of the programme and assists in providing protein on a regular basis.
“We really are appreciative and we thank God for the assistance that we get particularly from KFC, Food for the Poor and other businesses that we seek to contact for assistance on a monthly basis,” she said, while also commending the work of the St. Ann’s Bay Methodist Church in the effort.
She also appealed to residents to offer assistance whenever possible.
