Senate Amends Executive Agency Act

The Executive Agencies Act has been amended to give legitimacy to those agencies, which were established before the Act was passed in 2002.
Piloting the legislation during a meeting of the Senate last Friday (Dec. 3), Leader of Government Business and Information Minister, Senator Burchell Whiteman, explained that the Bill sought to validate all actions taken by the eight organizations, which were brought into being by administrative decision between April 1999 and April 2001.The law was however passed in 2002.
With the amendments to the Act, undertakings by the bodies before the legislation was passed will be authenticated.
The decision to create executive agencies was taken in 1998 as the model was considered an effective method of carrying out certain public sector functions.
In highlighting the performance of several of the agencies, Senator Whiteman noted that the model had been working well with a number of the entities showing increase in revenue and efficiency levels.Meanwhile, Members of the Opposition also voiced their approval of the model, noting that the level of service and efficiency of the agencies were much improved.
