The Full Story

Self-employed persons are being reminded to provide accurate information to the National Housing Trust (NHT) when making contributions.

Assistant General Manager for Compliance Management at the NHT, Dameon McNally, said this is important to avoid delays in accessing refunds eight years after the contribution was made.

Mr. McNally was addressing a Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Think Tank in Kingston on January 4.

He informed that data integrity is one of the main reasons why persons have experienced difficulties in getting their refunds.

“Our process is electronic and if it is that the information [you provided in your application] does not match what we have on record, there will be a challenge. It creates an exception and when there is an exception, the refund will not be processed,” he explained.

For this reason, the Assistant General Manager emphasised that employees must provide the right information to their employers, who should make certain to submit the correct details to the Trust.

“Additionally, persons who are self-employed must ensure that the information they provide in their refund application is consistent with what was submitted for that particular year,” he said.

Mr. McNally also reminded contributors who have undergone a name change, to update their information at their place of work.

This is in addition to changing the name on the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and Tax Registration Number (TRN) cards.

He said this will ensure that the accurate information is shared with the NHT, which is now accepting refund applications for contributions made in 2016 and prior years that have not been claimed.
