The Jamaica Constabulary Force are advising members of the public that although summer is usually a time for enjoyment, and fun for youngsters and adults alike.

Due to the summer heat, persons should take precautions when at the beaches, rivers and pools.

In such a relaxed atmosphere, it can be easy to let one’s guard down, and overlook the precautions normally taken to ensure safety.

The following are some useful tips to keep in mind:

1. Due to the adverse condition of the sea in this season, the sea is regarded as rough and persons should stay away or proceed with caution.

2. Look to ensure a lifeguard is on duty at the beach.

3. When going to public beaches or other water-based activities, parents or guardians should be cognizant and pay keen attention to their child or children.

4. Persons should avoid pools where a lifeguard is not present.

5. Persons are being warned not to venture out into the sea. Especially those persons who are not trained swimmers.

6. Be knowledgeable of the water environment you are in and its potential hazards, such as deep and shallow areas, currents, depth changes, obstructions and where the entry and exit points are located. The more informed you are, the more aware you will be of hazards and
safe practices.

7. Do not consume alcohol when swimming, diving or boating. Alcohol impairs your judgment, balance, and coordination, it also affects your swimming and diving skills.
