Restrictions for Heavy Duty Trucks on Mount Rosser during CWC 2007

February 19, 2007

The Full Story

The movement of heavy duty trucks on Mount Rosser will be restricted between the hours of 3:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. on match days during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007.
This is according to Major Desmon Brown, Chairman of the Transportation Committee for the Jamaica Local Organising Committee (LOC).
In an interview with JIS News, he said that the Committee had been in discussions with relevant stakeholders including bauxite companies about the plans. “The bauxite companies have agreed that they will not put their bauxite trucks on the road before 10:00 a.m.,” Major Brown said.
He further explained that the decision to commence the restriction so early in the day lies in the fact that if there was any breakdown of trucks, there would be a reasonable time window in which to deal with the problem.
“The problems are usually caused on Mount Rosser and Mount Diablo when there is a breakdown of a large truck,” Major Brown remarked.
There will be no restrictions in the evenings in terms of persons trying to reach their destinations as the time factor will not be as significant as in the morning.
Major Brown also revealed that based on feedback from a public forum held on January 24, the decision was made to abandon plans for a one-way system through the Bog Walk Gorge. “We are responding to the recommendations we have received,” he said.
“Traffic in the gorge will be as normal but we will have more policemen in the area, especially by Flat Bridge so that the traffic can flow smoothly,” Major Brown stated.
As part of its Yellow Package, Jamaica will host four warm-up matches between March 5 and 9 at the Trelawny Multipurpose Stadium, as well as the Opening Ceremony on March 11.
In addition, seven matches including a semi-final will be played at Sabina Park. The first match to bowl off the tournament on March 13 will see the West Indies playing against Pakistan.
Following that, Zimbabwe will tackle Ireland on March 15 then, and this will be followed by a match up between Pakistan and Ireland on March 17. The West Indies will play Zimbabwe on March 19, while Pakistan will take on Zimbabwe on March 21. The last match in the group will feature the West Indies and Ireland, on March 23.
