The Full Story

The proposed redevelopment of the Trelawny Stadium will see the infrastructure transformed into a driver of sports tourism for the island.

Speaking at Wednesday’s (June 26) post-Cabinet Briefing at Jamaica House, Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Minister, Hon Olivia Grange, said the venture would be driven by private equity and non-public funding.

The cost for redevelopment of the facility is valued at US$550 million.

“The investors propose to transform [the Trelawny stadium] into a high-performance sports complex that can accommodate 21 sport disciplines, host international games [and] awards ceremonies, and serve as a training ground,” she outlined.

Minister Grange said the sports tourism development proposal includes the construction of high-rise condominiums and a hotel.

She pointed out that the ongoing discussions with private interests about the proposed development are going well and hold immense potential for the island’s sports programme.

“I have always said that the Trelawny stadium would be at the centre of a sport development programme for sports tourism,” she said.
