The Full Story

Operations at bauxite and alumina company, Jamalco, are expected to resume by June 2022.

Production at the Clarendon-based plant was halted due to a major fire last August that destroyed the powerhouse. Reconstruction of the plant is on track and will take place over three phases.

Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Dr. the Hon. Nigel Clarke, in his opening Budget Debate presentation on Tuesday (March 8) said that a set of boilers to provide steam is being installed during the first phase of reconstruction, which will bring operations up to 50 per cent of capacity.

It is expected that mining operations and jobs will begin to be restored in the weeks prior to the resumption of production.

Dr. Clarke informed that by the end of September 2022, Jamalco expects to be back at 100 per cent production, barring any unforeseen circumstances, during phase two.

The third phase involves the rebuilding of the powerhouse. It is anticipated that this reconstruction will be completed by 2024.
