Newly Renovated Surgical Ward at KPH Reopens

The 36-bed Ward 2 North at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) has been officially reopened following extensive renovation valued at more than $10 million.

The project was a collaborative effort involving public and private-sector entities and aimed at addressing critical infrastructure needs in the surgical ward.

It involved installation of air-conditioning units in the doctors’ and nurses’ stations, repainting, retiling the ward, upgrading restrooms, and refurbishing the staff break area.

Speaking at the reopening at the hospital’s downtown Kingston location on Tuesday (March 26), Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jacquiline Bisasor-McKenzie, said the private-public partnership reflects a commitment by the Government and its partners to provide state-of-the-art facilities for patient care.

She noted that partnership is important for the buildout of the public health infrastructure and to enhance capacity to improve service delivery.

“Though the improvement of the health system is incumbent on the Government, we realise that partnership – whether private sector or international partners – has played and continues to play a very significant role in developing our health system,” she said.

Key donors are D.M. Equipment Company Limited/Zoukie Trucking Services Limited and their overseas counterpart, Zhejiang Putian Integrated Housing Company Limited, China.

The renovations, which spanned a seven-month period, mark a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance the facilities and services of the hospital.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of KPH, Dr. Natalie Whylie, said that the improvements undertaken have provided a more comfortable and efficient space for patients and staff.

“What it means for us is that the staff and patients will have a better space. A renovated space also enables us to deliver care in a more efficient way, and so we look forward to the improved value and service that we will be able to provide,” she said.

Regional Director South-East Regional Health Authority (SERHA), Errol Greene, expressed gratitude to the donors and sponsors for their generous support to the healthcare sector.

“These renovations that we do through partnerships will not only enhance the patient experience but also empower our healthcare professionals to deliver the best possible care with state-of-the-art equipment and modern amenities,” he noted.
