The National Education Trust (NET) has called on Jamaicans at home and in the diaspora to maintain their support for initiatives aimed at improving the country’s education sector.

“We have many needs in the education sector that I’m sure you are well aware of and, of course, we can accept [donations] to cover specific activities or specific projects,” said Director, Donor and Partnership Management at NET, Keisha Johnson.

She informed that NET is prioritising programmes enhancing literacy, numeracy and examination outcomes in 245 primary and secondary schools.

“We are prioritising those schools because we feel every child deserves the same fair chance,” she noted.

NET was among entities participating in the Government-at-Your-Service (GOVAYS)/Marketplace feature at the recent 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St. James.

The entity is tasked with mobilising resources and coordinating efforts to support the development of education across the country.

The entity focuses on improving infrastructure, technology integration and educational outcomes in schools, with the objective of enhancing the overall quality of education accessible to Jamaican students.

Ms. Johnson extended gratitude for the ongoing support in funding scholarships and school infrastructure projects.

“We are so thankful to our diaspora members… and, of course, our local members and foundations that give generously to support our children,” she said.

Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) also participated in the diaspora conference, offering a range of services.

These included property tax query, online payments for taxes, tax registration number (TRN) application and general tax information.

TAJ, an entity under the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, functions as the country’s revenue authority, overseeing compliance, tax collection, legal and administrative support and conducting audits for income tax, general consumption tax, stamp duty, and transfer tax.
