Nain Basic School to be Renovated

Cabinet has approved the award of a contract valued at $72.59 million for the renovation of the Nain Basic School and construction of the St. Elizabeth Early Childhood Resource Centre, both in St. Elizabeth. The contract has been awarded to A-One Construction Company.
Speaking at a post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, yesterday (September 9), Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister, with responsibility for Information and Telecommunications, Hon. Daryl Vaz, said that a contract has also been awarded to Pavement and Structures Limited, to construct 65 two-bedroom units at a cost of $315 million, at the Palms of Portmore, in St. Catherine.
The Minister said that Cabinet approved the award of a US$1.42 million (J$125 million) contract to Illuminat Jamaica Limited for the provision of presentation equipment to schools and colleges islandwide, under the e-learning project.
“The primary goal of the e-learning project is to contribute to an improvement in the quality of education between Grades Seven and 11 and forms One to Five in selected high schools,” he said.
Meanwhile, Cabinet approved a contract for the procurement and distribution of primary workbooks and textbooks to: MacMillan Publishers, in the sum of $225 million; Jamaican Publishing House, $34.55 million; and Carlong Publishers Caribbean, $62.47 million.
They will supply and distribute workbooks for Grades One to Three and social studies and science textbooks for Grade 5 to some 815 primary schools islandwide for the 2009/2010 academic year.
