The Full Story

Minister of Transport and Mining, Hon. Robert Montague, says the Government will be establishing a Mining Management Institute to provide training and certification for Jamaicans working in the mining sector.

“We will …train managers, supervisors and workers in all aspects of mining management,” he said in his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday (May 30).

“The management of a mine or quarry operation requires proper record keeping, safety rules, reclamation techniques and energy efficiency, while reducing damage to the environment and protecting people’s health. This will be the base of the curriculum,” he noted.

Mr. Montague said the Ministry is determined to lift standards within the mining industry with training and certification for sustainability.

The mining sector contributes 2.2 per cent to Jamaica’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
