The Ministry of Education and Youth is reporting minimal damage to Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) child-care facilities and offices across Jamaica, during the passage of Hurricane Beryl.

The CPFSA had approximately 4,545 children in its care up to March 2024.

In a media release issued on Tuesday (July 9), the Ministry noted that there was major damage to the Manning’s Child Care Facility in St. Elizabeth.

“Damage was done to the roofs of the facility’s kitchen, main dining room, a dormitory and the farming equipment storeroom,” the release indicated.

The Ministry shared that other children’s homes sustained damage and the CPFSA will be making contact with the National Works Agency and other government agencies to request repairs.

The CPFSA is governed by the Child Care and Protection Act and provides services to children deemed by the courts to be in need of care and protection, those who are awaiting the outcome of a court proceedings, and families having difficulties caring for their children.
