Manchester Parish Council to Implement Permit Parking System

The Manchester Parish Council will be implementing a permit parking system for Mandeville, to address the problem of traffic congestion in the town.
“We intend to regulate parking, ease traffic congestion, make provisions for the free flow of traffic and so encourage space turnover,” explained Secretary Manager at the Council, Winston Palmer.
“This new system that we are proposing,” he told JIS News, “should go a long way in meeting these objectives as it is aimed at the reduction of inappropriate parking, which impacts in a negative way, on a number of businesses that are located in Mandeville.”
The implementation date for the project, which will involve the establishment of dedicated parking corridors, is set for Monday, November 26.
The Secretary Manager indicated that enforcement will take effect between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. from Mondays to Saturdays and the cost for parking is $50 per hour. Persons, who park in the designated areas without displaying their permits, will have their vehicles clamped and will be required to pay $2,500 to have the clamps removed.
In the meantime, he informed that residents will be sensitized about the project through a series of public consultations, which will be held in West Park Crescent, East Park Crescent, Hargreaves Avenue, Ward Avenue, Villa Road, South Race Course and Manchester Road.
Mr. Palmer indicated that revenue earned through the initiative will be used to improve the parish’s road network.
