JCF to get Breathalyzer Instruments and Screening Devices

Cabinet has approved the award of a contract in the sum of US $229, 609 to the United States-based CMI Incorporation to supply 20 breathalyzer instruments and 200 SD-2 screening devices for the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
Minister of Information and Development, Donald Buchanan, who made the disclosure at yesterday’s (July 2) weekly post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, pointed out that the acquisition of the equipment was expected to restore the JCF’s breathalyzer programme.
“It is therefore very important that we enhance the Force’s ability to enforce critical elements of the Road Traffic Act (and) strengthen road safety,” Minister Buchannan stated.
According to notes from Cabinet, the JCF’s breathalyzer programme has been almost non-existent due to the need for working equipment. Only 20 of 200 instruments acquired by the JCF at the inception of the programme are functional and the majority of the non-functional instruments have been at the Bureau of Standards for a considerable period and the Bureau has not been able to restore them to proper working order.
Additionally, of the 15 analysis centres across the island, 11 are without breath analysis instruments.
