The Full Story

Jamalco, the bauxite and alumina refinery in Clarendon, has been commended for organising a two-week science and environment camp for children in Manchester.
Parent, Evelyn Lee Chamberlain, has described the camp as exciting and very educational.
At the closing ceremony, held at the Prattville Primary and Infant School in the parish on July 31, Mrs. Lee Chamberlain said other parents and herself were grateful that Jamalco allowed their children to benefit from the two-week camp.
“The children here have been very excited about it. During the camp, my little daughter reminded me every morning that she had to go to the camp. The counsellors were very accommodating and the food was quite nutritious; overall, it was very educational. Children live what they learn and the experience of this camp will have a lasting impact on the little ones,” she said.
Meanwhile, final year teaching student at Church Teachers’ College and counsellor at the camp, Miss Deniek Trench informed that the camp was an experience that would help her when she begins her teaching practice, adding that the idea of a camp for children was beneficial for both children and parents.
“It was a great experience; we had a total of 56 students and Prattville and surrounding communities were quite receptive to the idea of a camp for children, and I believe it has helped everyone,” she said.
“Most of the focus was about practical things and a little book work. It showed me, as a teacher, different ways of dealing with children from different homes. Once you are in the classrooms you assume the role of a parent and this was a great experience for me,” Miss Trench added.
At the camp, the children were able to display items they had made.
