Infrastructure Work to be Carried Out in Black River

The Ministry of Transport and Works, will be undertaking construction and repairs to key infrastructure and a historical building in Black River, St. Elizabeth.
Minister, Mike Henry, during a tour of damaged roadways and farm road projects in South West St. Elizabeth on November 14, said that construction of a sea wall is to begin immediately in the vicinity of the Black River Hospital, to protect the facility, an historic building, and other areas from the encroaching sea. Funding for the construction of the sea wall is to be procured from the Hurricane Gustav Funds.
Mr. Henry said that the Ministry will also be working with the St. Elizabeth Parish Council and the Ministry of Tourism, to restore the boardwalk in Black River. “We have a revetment to begin to build and we are expanding that revetment. I have invited the Ministry of Tourism, which has already offered to work with us, to begin to restore the boardwalk for Black River,” he said.
He added that he had also “come across a building, which is a heritage building under the Ministry, which has been allowed to deteriorate to nothing. I am going to seek to restore that because I am restoring parish offices.”
Black River was designated a Protected National Heritage District, by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust on April 8, 1999 and is one of five designated historical districts in Jamaica. The others are: Spanish Town, St. Catherine, Falmouth, the Titchfield Peninsula, Portland, Port Royal and Palisadoes, Kingston.
