The Full Story

The Government of Jamaica (GOJ) has organised a series of events to mark Jamaica’s 60th year of independence under the theme: ‘Reigniting a Nation for Greatness.’

Listed below are some of the scheduled activities.

July

• Thursday, July 28
1. The Jamaica 60 Independence Village
Venue: National Indoor Sports Centre
Opens daily from 12:00 p.m. to midnight and will feature concerts, daily activities and nightly entertainment. The Village is scheduled to close Friday, August 5, 2022.
2. Finals of the Jamaica 60 Festival Song Competition
Venue: National Indoor Sports Centre starting at 8:00 p.m.
• Saturday, July 30 – Finals of the Jamaica 60 Gospel Star Competition
Venue: National Indoor Sports Centre starting at 8:00 p.m.
• Sunday, July 31
1. Jamaica 60 Ecumenical Church Service
Venue: Boulevard Baptist Church
2. Emancipation Jubilee
Venue: Seville Heritage Park, St Ann, starting at 9:30 a.m.
3. Emancipation Watch Night in the Village and viewing of Seville
Jubilee
Venue: National Indoor Sports Centre starting at 4:30 p.m.

August

• Monday, August 1
1. Augus Mawning Markit
Venue: National Indoor Sports Centre starting at 6:00 a.m.
2. Jamaica 60 Independence Float and Street Parade
Theme: ‘Re-igniting a Nation for Peace, Love and Unity’
Venue: Streets of Kingston starting at 10:00 a.m.
3. Jamaica Festival Queen Coronation
Venue: National Indoor Sports Centre starting at 4:30 p.m.
• Tuesday, August 2 – Old Skool Dancehall
Venue: National Indoor Sports Centre starting at 8:00 p.m.
• Wednesday, August 3 – Mello-Go-Roun
Venue: National Indoor Sports Centre starting at 8:00 p.m.
• Thursday, August 4 – Jamaica Praise Gospel Concert
Venue: National Indoor Sports Centre starting at 8:00 p.m.
• Friday, August 5 – Independence Watch Night in the Village
Venue: National Indoor Sports Centre starting at 8:00 p.m.
• Saturday, August 6
1. Jamaica 60 Grand Gala
Venue: National Stadium starting at 6:00 p.m.
2. Jamaica 60 Independence Street Dance
Venue: Islandwide starting at 9:00 p.m.
• Sunday, August 7 – Jamaica 60 Western Gala
Venue: Catherine Hall Sports Complex, Montego Bay, starting at 6:00 p.m.

The ‘Kingston Biennial 2022: Pressure’ exhibition at the National Gallery of Jamaica is now open and will close on December 31, 2022.
