Access the GOJ Subsidy on Electricity!
May 30, 2022The Full Story
Relief is in sight for many persons struggling to pay for electricity, as effective May 1, 2022, the Government of Jamaica (GOJ) has reduced electricity bills by 20 per cent. To benefit from this subsidy consumers must use 200 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity or less for the months of April, May, June and July.
How to Access the Subsidy
Postpaid Customers
For the subsidy to be applied to their May bill postpaid residential customers must have used 200 kilowatt hours or less during the month of April.
Prepaid Customers
Prepaid residential customers who paid any amount during April, will receive $3,000.00 credit on their account.
If prepaid residential customers have smart meters, they will be directly credited and be notified by text or email. Prepaid customers without smart meters, will be sent a credit voucher number by text message.
There is no application process for the subsidy as once the requirements stated above are met, customers will see either credit applied to their account or reduced bills.
Conserve to Benefit
Here are some tips to conserve electricity so as to keep your usage below 200 kWh hours and receive the subsidy:
- Ensure that you turn off lights and plug out appliances that are not being used.
- Use LED bulbs for lighting as they use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs.
- Iron once a week.
- If you have air-conditioning use only when necessary.
- Don’t open fridge doors unnecessarily or allow ice to build up in the freezer.
- If you have hot water powered by electricity install low-flow showerheads on shower outlets, and faucet and sink aerators on bathroom and kitchen pipes.
Remember that conserving electricity gives you access to the GOJ subsidy and that means more money in your pocket!
