The Full Story

KINGSTON — A community centre is to be built in Rocky Point, Clarendon at a cost of more than $30 million, in honour of late former Prime Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for South East Clarendon, the Most Hon. Hugh Lawson Shearer.

Minister of Health, Hon. Rudyard Spencer, who is MP for the constituency, where Rocky Point is located, made the announcement at the groundbreaking ceremony for the community health centre recently.

He said the project, which is going through the approval process, will serve as a training facility and a shelter for residents in the area.

“You know the experience that you have had whenever it rains, and whenever there is a storm, so I am looking forward to it. It is going to be multi-purpose; we are going to have training of young girls, and young boys here, and it will be the responsibility of the citizens of Rocky Point,” he stated.

He said that permission had been sought from Dr. Denise Eldemire-Shearer for the facility to be named after her late husband.

Mr. Shearer was elected as MP for the constituency in 1967, and appointed Prime Minister the same year, following the death of Sir Donald Sangster. He served the area as MP until 1993. Mr. Shearer died on July 5, 2004, at the age of 81.
