The Full Story

Prime Minister, the Most Honorable Andrew Holness, says the Government remains steadfast in its commitment to implementing policies that promote social cohesion, reduce inequality, and enhance the quality of life for all Jamaicans.

He noted that as a nation, the Government cannot afford to sacrifice the well-being of the most disadvantaged citizens in the pursuit of short-term gains.

“We must uphold our responsibility to protect the poor and vulnerable,” he said, ensuring that they have access to the resources and support they need to thrive.

Mr. Holness was speaking at the unveiling of the Lynden G. Newland bust at National Heroes Circle in Kingston on May 22.

The sculpture pays tribute to the late former Labour Minister, who founded the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) in 1966.

The Prime Minister said Mr. Newland must be credited for conceptualising one of the most crucial safety-net protections for those in need.

“L.G. Newland’s vision and commitment to creating the National Insurance Scheme have had a profound impact on the lives of our citizens,” he noted.

“His refusal to bow to external pressures and his dedication to designing a system that offers support to the most vulnerable members of our society deserve our utmost respect and admiration,” he added.

The Prime Minister reiterated the Administration’s resolve to maintaining sound and solid macroeconomic policies for the betterment of the nation.

Citing the Government’s record of success in economic management, with nine consecutive Budgets without the imposition of new taxes, Mr. Holness said that this level of fiscal discipline has been instrumental in fostering economic stability and growth, enabling Jamaica to weather external challenges and uncertainties.

“Our Government has demonstrated time and again that responsible economic policies can yield positive results… and is the right thing to do. By maintaining fiscal prudence and prioritising the [needs of the poor and vulnerable], we have been able to create [a more inclusive and resilient society],” he added.

Prime Minister Holness further underscored the importance of striking a balance between economic growth and social welfare, asserting that sustainable development must be built on principles of equity and justice.

Mr. Holness said the Government will continue to seek consensus in uniting the country on a shared vision of progress and prosperity, encouraging citizens to actively engage in the development and implementation of policies that reflect the values of compassion and empowerment.
