The Full Story

Students from across St. Catherine South Eastern have received educational supplies, including school bags and cash grants, from Member of Parliament, Robert Miller.

Speaking at a back-to-school treat, held recently at the Independence City Community Centre in Portmore, Mr. Miller urged the students to perform at a high level in school.

“I believe in a holistic development, and I am encouraging you this academic year to put your head to the wheels and ensure that you take academics seriously, because it will propel you into prosperity,” he said.

Mr. Miller said the educational support for the students was done at a cost of over $3.5 million, which was largely funded from his personal resources, and donations from friends, with items sponsored by corporate entities.

He lauded parents for their continued investment in their children’s education, adding that, “you have deprived yourself of many things, to ensure that your children get the education that they deserve, and we want both parents to be in their children’s lives”.

Mr. Miller told the gathering that his mission is about getting as many students as possible to matriculate and get the best education that they can attain.

He said that parents and guardians who need help for education should approach his office before the end of June each year, and “once resources are available, we will assist”.

President of the Independence City Community Development Committee (CDC), Camille Stewart, said she was “overjoyed” to witness the support provided for the children.

“It is very necessary, and I am very happy to see it done,” she said.
