Education Ministry Explains School Transfer Procedure for Students

By: , June 25, 2024

The Full Story

The Ministry of Education and Youth is advising that general transfers of students between schools are not facilitated, except in specific adverse circumstances.

According to a Ministry bulletin, this policy ensures that educational placements remain stable and aligned with academic processes.

Parents and guardians seeking transfers for students entering high school through the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) placement process are reminded of their responsibility to follow established procedures.

The transfer procedure outlined in the bulletin stipulates that the accepting school must issue a letter to the parent/guardian, a copy of which should be presented to the institution where the child was originally placed through the PEP process.

The initial school will then provide a release letter that, along with the acceptance letter, must include the child’s name and Student Registration Number (SRN), located on the PEP Student Report.

Additionally, the parent/guardian should draft a letter addressed to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Youth, requesting approval for the transfer.

This correspondence must include the child’s name and SRN and be accompanied by the acceptance and release letters.

These documents should be submitted to the Ministry’s relevant Regional Office.

The Ministry, through the Regional Offices, will process approval letters within one week of receiving requests.

Approval letters will be issued to the accepting and releasing schools, specifying the student’s name and SRN.

For further inquiries, persons may contact any of the Regional Directors or send an email to pepaction@moey.gov.jm.

This ensures that transfers are managed efficiently and in accordance with educational guidelines.

The Ministry has indicated that it remains committed to supporting the educational journey of every student within the system.
