ECC Chairman Encourages Operators To Obey Registration Deadline Of Feb. 29

Chairman of the Early Childhood Commission (ECC), Professor Maureen Samms-Vaughn has said that it is important for all institutions where children under the age of six are being kept for education, care and development, to register by the set deadline of February 29.
Such institutions include day care, kindergarten departments of preparatory schools, pre-schools, infant schools, and infant departments.
“The Early Childhood Commission has a regulatory function, but it also has a development function.we can’t assist in developing what we don’t know about,” Professor Samms-Vaughn stated, at today’s (February 20), post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.
She informed that in order to assist persons with the application for registration, the ECC has deployed a mobile unit which has so far been in rural areas, such Savanna-la-Mar, Linstead and parts of Trelawny.
“We have had so far wonderful responses. We have had some 100 persons per day, accessing the services of the mobile unit and we are very pleased,” she remarked, adding that a schedule has been published for six additional rural areas where there are two collection points per zone.
“We are very pleased with Members of Parliament who have really been rallying to support their institutions.we understand that there is a little bit of a back-log with some of the inspections by the fire department and public health. This is a new process.come in and talk to us, so that we can find out just what is happening,” she urged.
The Chairman stressed that everyone should be part of the process, as information on schools can be used to develop policy, proper planning, and appropriate recommendations for the improvement of the sector.
