Consul General Lauds Community Organisations

Consul General of Jamaica in New York, Mrs. Geneive Brown Metzger, has lauded community organisations in the Northeast United States, for their role in the development of Jamaica.
Addressing patrons at the 18th Annual Independence Ball and Scholarship Awards Gala of the Jamaican Civic and Cultural Association of Rockland (JAMCCAR), in New Hempstead, New York, on July 26, Mrs. Brown Metzger said that the input of the overseas community was more than just remittances.
“I fully appreciate the important role that organisations, associations and individuals like yourselves play in the development of Jamaica and the significant resources that the Diaspora has at its disposal,” she said.
The Consul General said that as a unit of the Diaspora, “your input is most critical in the ongoing calls for constitutional reform, an end to crime and violence, economic development, affordable healthcare and universal education.”
She praised the organisation for its commitment to community activism and nation building over the past 18 years.
The event was held under the theme: ‘Purpose and Prosperity – Eighteen Years of Service’, and recognised seven high school graduating seniors with scholarships worth thousands of dollars.
“We continue to be committed to our scholarship and outreach programmes, both here and abroad. These college bound students have achieved academic excellence and other worthy accomplishments and must be commended,” said JAMCCAR’s President, Carol Williams, who assisted with the presentations.
