The Full Story

The recently paved Moreland community road in St. Catherine North Eastern is a “demonstration” of the infrastructure to be repaired from the $20 billion that will be spent across the island, says Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness.

While on a tour of the Moreland road on January 18, Mr. Holness said it connects several other communities and fits the type that will be given islandwide attention.

Under the Government’s $40-billion Shared Prosperity through Accelerated Improvement to our Road Network (SPARK) Programme, $20 billion will be allocated for rural/community roads.

The Prime Minister said from a recent allocation of $40 million to each constituency, the Member of Parliament for the area, Kerensia Morrison, recommended that part of the fund be used to improve the thoroughfare.

“The residents are very happy that they now have this road repaired, and their transportation is much more comfortable,” he said, adding that it serves residents who traverse Guy’s Hill, Riversdale and Troja.

The Prime Minister underscored. that the money would have to be “strategically utilised”, and citizens must be given “ proper means” to voice their concerns and assist their representatives and the Government to prioritise the roads that impact the economy and normal life.

He said community leaders, church leaders and students should be part of community consultations being led by the Members of Parliament in town hall sessions, because “even though $20 billion is a significant allocation, it will not be able to do all the roads, so members of communities should have a say in which roads should get done”.

For her part, Miss Morrison said the road was not repaired for 30 years, and “we have done a significant portion of it, and we are looking forward to continue part two”, adding that the road is an alternative to the Guy’s Hill main road, and it must be accessible.
