Up Park Camp in Kingston came alive with an exciting and colourful show of military displays and performances, as the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) celebrated its 60th anniversary on Friday (July 29).
Under the theme: ‘Forward in Service: Celebrating 60 Years’, the two-part event took patrons on a journey of the history and culture of the JDF, with all the pomp and pageantry benefitting the occasion, while paying tribute to service members.
The day started with the customary Armed Forces Day Parade where the Governor General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen and Deputy Prime Minister and National Security Minister, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, handed out medals to service members in recognition of their work.
The second half of the day was the exciting Military Tattoo, which involved thrilling and awe-inspiring displays by local and international military personnel and uniformed groups.
It included drills and precision performances from the Barbados Defence Force Band, the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force Steel Orchestra, the Jamaica Combined Cadet Force Band, and the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) Band.
There were also riveting demonstrations of physical and technical skills and stunts by the JCF’s Daredevil Riders, the Harpy Eagles Paratroopers from the Guyana Defence Force, and the Jamaica Fire Brigade.
Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness in a statement issued to the media, commended the JDF on the 60th anniversary milestone, noting that the Force has “remained steadfast in its commitment to Jamaica.”
“Beyond our shores, the JDF has demonstrated its role as an organisation for the advancement of training, capacity-building and the provision of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief,” the statement said.
Chief of Defence Staff, Rear Admiral Antonette Wemyss Gorman, said that the JDF has “never been afraid to innovate and go beyond the call of duty to achieve the goal of a safe and secure Jamaica.”
