Clean-Up and Beautification Works to be Carried Out in Chapelton

September 21, 2006

The Full Story

The Clarendon Health Department, the Chapelton Police Youth Club and Peace Corp Volunteers, will join forces on Saturday (Sept. 23) to clean-up and beautify the roadway leading to the Chapelton hospital.
Earl Shakespeare, Public Health Inspector with responsibility for the Chapelton area, told JIS News that the scope of work would involve landscaping Brenton Avenue.
“The condition of the road leading to the hospital should at least represent the type of service that we provide at the hospital seeing that it is a health facility. Environmental services are also provided at the hospital so it is incumbent on us to ensure that the road is aesthetically pleasing and to encourage our clients to be aware of their environment and their responsibility to their environment,”Mr. Shakespeare said.
He told JIS News that some 20 persons would be participating in the activity, which would also include the removal of garbage from the town. The Public Health Inspector has encouraged other community members to participate in the clean-up and beautification works.
“One of our main objectives is actually to make community persons aware of their environment and to participate in the maintenance of the area,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Shakespeare informed JIS News that the clean-up activity would be replicated in surrounding communities such as Pennants, Summerfield, Morgan’s Pass, Woodhall, and Mount Providence, under a two-year programme being undertaken in conjunction with the Peace Corps Programme.
“The programme also comes with a health education component to teach the community members how to carry out proper solid waste management and we want this programme to be sustainable,” he said.
Mr. Shakespeare informed that the Police Youth Club would be adopting Brenton Road to continue the maintenance programme and a plan was in place to encourage members of the community to adopt different streets in Chapelton.
