The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is encouraging citizens to stay off the roads as Hurricane Beryl begins to impact the island.
“If you don’t have to move to a shelter, you don’t have to move for an emergency, you should hunker down in place and try to ride out this one,” said Acting Director General, ODPEM, Richard Thompson, during an interview with JIS News.
He noted that there are persons who might be tempted or “adventurous enough to say they are going to go hurricane watching,” however, the ODPEM strongly advises against any such sightseeing activity.
“We don’t want persons out there doing anything which is contrary to our legal processes,” said Mr. Thompson.
He further noted that a curfew is currently in effect until 6:00 p.m. this evening.
Mr. Thompson is also encouraging persons to check in on their neighbours, especially vulnerable individuals such as the elderly, persons with disabilities and single mothers.
