MONTEGO BAY — Young men from the community of Bamboo in St. Ann are to benefit from a 'Life Builders' weekend camp organised by the Men’s Fellowship of the Bamboo New Testament Church of God.

The camp will be held from August 26 to 28 on the grounds of the former Sunbeam Preparatory School in the district of Hazelwood from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. each day, and will engage boys eight to 18 years old.

“The intention of this camp is to instill in our boys, the responsibilities of manhood,” said President of the men’s fellowship, Ernest Higgins.

“In our society, much is desired of our men, and so we want to teach these boys the things that are expected of them in order for them to become productive citizens in the society,” he told JIS News.

He said that the men’s fellowship deliberately chose the last weekend in August to host the camp because it is closer to the reopening of school “and we want these boys to carry over that which they would have learnt at the camp, into the school system."

Under the theme: ‘Good boys become good men,’ participants will be engaged in a number of sessions over the three days, where discussions will be focused on human sexuality, personal hygiene, general etiquette, decision making, approach to education, among other things.

“What we hope to achieve from this is that these young men will grow to understand what their role is in society, how to be responsible persons, how to relate to the opposite sex and so on,” Mr. Higgins said.

“It might be long-term but if we start now, the effects of it will roll over and we will see better results in our youngsters,” he stated, noting that the church and the men’s fellowship will be playing an active role in helping to shape the lives of these youngsters.

He is appealing to parents, especially fathers, to play their role and work with the church in creating responsible men for a better Jamaica.
