The Full Story

The staff of the Attorney General’s (AG) Chambers is being lauded for the quality of their work in administering the legal affairs of the Government and, by extension, Jamaica.

The staff’s work was highlighted by Attorney General, Hon. Patrick Atkinson, Q.C., during his 2014/15 Sectoral Debate presentation in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, June 18.

Mr. Atkinson noted that while the staff complement is “limited,” their ethic for teamwork is “limitless”.

Notable among these, he said, is the Solicitor General, Nicole Foster-Pusey, Q.C., the first female to hold this position. He thanked her for the “invaluable and indispensable service” she provides.

Mr. Atkinson pointed out that the Department currently has several Divisions, each headed by a Director, all females, each of whom has a team of attorneys and support staff to carry out their duties.

These include: Litigation, State Proceedings, Commercial Affairs, General Legal Advice, International Affairs, Constitutional and Legislative Affairs, and the Constitutional and Commercial Divisions.

“The work in the Attorney General’s Chambers is voluminous and of great significance to the country. Every Memorandum of Understanding, every contract for every business enterprise the Government enters into, whether through a Ministry or a public body; every lawsuit against the Government, and any legal issue that involves a Constitutional question, passes through the Chambers,” Mr. Atkinson said.

“Indeed, most of the Cabinet submissions also follow that route. In this regard, I wish to place on record the selfless and invaluable service the attorneys and support staff of the Chambers perform for this country,”  he added.
