Government is to re-table a Bill to amend the Broadcasting and Radio Re-Diffusion Act, to provide for the licensing of Independent Programme Providers (IPP).
Minister of Information and Development, Donald Buchanan, who made the disclosure during his 2007/08 Sectoral presentation in the House of Representatives, said that the move will “impact positively on the development of a vibrant film and television industry” and stimulate more investment in local content programming.
“Already, independent programme providers have indicated that this new industry has created more than 3,000 jobs. The planned legislative support will lay the foundation for an injection of advertising revenue into the sector and will fuel expansion in the sector and create more jobs,” Mr. Buchanan stated.
He said that two of the projected benefits that will emerge from the liberalization of this industry include more choices for television viewing and reduced advertising costs, which will benefit small businesses.
