The Full Story

As part of the continuing support for the education sector, Alumina Partners of Jamaica (Alpart) recently staged its annual academic awards exercise for Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) students and teachers in Manchester.
At the function, held at International Chinese Restaurant in Mandeville, 35 students and four teachers received much-needed financial support in the form of grants and bursaries.
Speaking at the event, Alpart’s Public Relations Manager, Lance Neita said that each GSAT recipient would receive $3,500 to help with back-to-school expenses.
“For the teachers, who hail from schools such as Campbell’s Castle All-age, Pratville Primary and Infant, Patrick Town All-age and Albion Primary, the value of each bursary is approximately $60,000 and is intended to help with covering the cost of attendance to a number of tertiary institutions such as Northern Caribbean University, University of the West Indies, Central Connecticut University and the International University of the Caribbean,” he said.
He said that “this year, the total cost of maintaining the programme is $2.7 million, as there are a number of teachers still enrolled at various universities, who we continue to support for the duration of time they have there”.
According to Mr. Neita, the programme, which started several years ago, “serves to underscore our many years of commitment to education for which we make no apology. I would even go further to say that this is the centrepiece of our community outreach programme.”
Stacey Forester from Pratville Primary and Infant School, who received a bursary, commended the bauxite company for its very worthwhile support to the education system.
“This is an excellent gesture and it shows the kind of commitment that you as a corporate entity have to giving back to the communities in which you operate,” she said.
