Paul Bogle Jamboree on October 20

Plans are in high gear for the staging of the sixth annual Paul Bogle Jamboree, in honour of the National Hero.
The event will be held at the Paul Bogle High School in Morant Bay, St. Thomas, on National Heroes Day (Monday, October 20), starting at 11:00 a.m.
Custos of St. Thomas, Marcia Bennett, will officially open the function at 3:00 p.m. while the Mayor of Morant Bay, Councillor Hanif Brown and Members of Parliament, Dr. Fenton Ferguson and James Robertson, are expected to bring greetings.
Chairman of the St. Thomas Association of Community Development Organisations Benevolent Society, Emerson James, told JIS News, that the event was a “modern day cultural extravaganza,” being held to celebrate the life and work of Paul Bogle.
He said that the main event on the day would be the Primary and High Schools Students’ Competition, whereby students would participate in a general knowledge competition.
“We want them to know what Paul Bogle stood for and some of his achievements,” he said, pointing out that the students would be judged on general knowledge, oral and written, and a talent piece with the emphasis on Paul Bogle.
Additionally, he said the students would participate in a singing contest, adding that the lyrics of the songs must highlight the National Hero. Winners from the primary and high schools will receive a computer each.
There will also be an entertainment package, including a full gospel concert; a cultural concert, featuring outstanding artistes from the parish; and competitions in football, netball and dominoes.
Mr. James said that the business community and other sectors have been invited to set up booths to showcase what they have to offer in the areas of art and craft, ethnic foods and other activities unique to their communities.
Other events include a lecture at the Anglican Church Hall in Morant Bay on November 6, starting at 10:00 a.m. and the Paul Bogle Relays on November 22, spearheaded by the Paul Bogle High School.
The Jamboree is organised by the St. Thomas Association of Community Development Organisations Benevolent Society.
