As part of efforts to heighten fire safety among children, the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) will stage an outreach event at the Junction Fire Station in St. Elizabeth on October 19.
Senior Deputy Superintendent in charge of the St. Elizabeth fire division, Homer Morris, told JIS News that the event, which is being held with support from the St. Elizabeth Parish Council, is the second such outreach targeting children.
He said that the first event, held last year, was a success. “We realized that one of the best ways to reach the citizens is via children, so we have a children’s outreach and they will take the message into the homes,” he stated.
He informed that the outreach will involve rescue demonstrations, and other simulations exercises, “to bring to the fore, exactly what the fire brigade does. Here, we are exhibiting our skills and our knowledge to the people”.
“We will be having a classroom setting where we will be teaching fire prevention doctrine to the children. We will be having giveaways, and we will be showing them how to reach the fire brigade,” he said.
Councillor for the Junction Division, Citany Holness, is encouraging the residents to support the outreach.
He said that last year, some 100 children participated, noting that adults also attended. He said that preparation has been made for an even larger turnout this year.
“An event like this is extremely useful, because what we are doing, and what the Fire Department is doing is to educate the children about safety in their homes, and it will assist also the business places. What happened last year, the adults came out as well. This year, it will be bigger and better,” he told JIS News.
Meanwhile, Senior Deputy Superintendent Morris informed that come October 30, the Junction fire station will stage an open day as part of fire safety awareness week activities.
“Our business of saving lives and preventing destruction of properties by fire is our core business, and we intend to reach all of Jamaica with this,” he said.
