Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, has hailed the New Social Housing Programme (NSHP), noting that the initiative is making “transformative differences” in people’s lives.
Speaking at the ribbon-cutting for a dwelling in Bartons, St. Catherine South Western on Friday (June 7), the Prime Minister noted that the programme was created to provide decent housing for vulnerable Jamaicans.
He said that the Members of Parliament (MPs) have been effective in coordinating applications for persons to benefit from the programme and supporting them through the process.
MPs, he noted, have information on issues affecting their constituents, as they “come into direct contact with people who are in need”.
The Prime Minister said that a major step in the process of obtaining a house under the NSHP is to provide proof of ownership of permission to occupy the land on which the unit will be built.
MP for St. Catherine South Western, Everald Warmington, encouraged residents, who are interested in benefiting from the NSHP to approach his office.
“My assistance goes beyond recommendations,” he said, noting that he helps persons complete the application form to ensure that there are no errors and where necessary, Justices of the Peace (JPs) are called on to certify matters related to land ownership.
Three houses were handed over to beneficiaries during the PM’s visit to St. Catherine South Western.
Among the new homeowners is Cassandra Pryce, a single mother of four children.
“The joy is bubbling. When God opens a door like this, mi haffi give thanks and recognise everyone who contribute to this. It is good to have an MP in the area who understands our situation,” she said.
So far, 229 units have been completed under the programme and another 54 will be ready within days.
The NSHP operates under the Housing, Opportunity, Production and Employment Programme (HOPE) of the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation.
The initiative is geared at improving the housing condition of the country’s most needy population.
