The Full Story

The inaugural Black River Film Festival is set to captivate audiences and shine a spotlight on the vibrant community of the town in St. Elizabeth, with a stellar lineup of celebrities.

The Festival, scheduled to take place from May 28 to 30, will be a celebration of cinema, culture, and community spirit, Founder, Dr. Ava Brown, told JIS News at a recent Think Tank at the agency’s Regional Office on Union Street in Montego Bay, St. James.

“While only in its first year, the Black River Film Festival is a must-attend event for film enthusiasts, industry professionals, and the public in general. It is expected to be big and exciting, with something for everyone, especially families,” she noted.

Dr. Brown said that one of the main highlights of the Festival will be the presence of several top celebrities from the world of film and entertainment, who are set to grace the town of Black River and engage with audiences throughout the event.

One name Dr. Brown did not hesitate to mention is Connie Chiume, from the hit movie Black Panther, who she said was looking forward to the trek to Jamaica to participate.

“She is just one of several of the distinguished celebrities expected to attend the Black River Film Festival, adding an extra touch of glamour and excitement to the event. Festival goers will have the opportunity to interact with these stars, attend special viewings and panel discussions, and immerse themselves in the world of cinema like never before,” she added.

Dr. Brown said that in addition to the star-studded lineup, the Black River Film Festival will showcase a diverse selection of films from around the world, including feature films, documentaries, short films, and animated works.

The Festival aims to celebrate the art of filmmaking in all its forms and provide a platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their talent.

For her part, Project Manager and Architect of the Festival’s Students’ Day, Kenya Uter-Morrison, said that the Festival is not just a celebration of cinema but also a way to support the local community and promote cultural enrichment.

She noted that the event will feature special screenings for local schools and community groups, as well as workshops and networking opportunities for aspiring filmmakers and industry professionals.
