PM Discusses Development Strategies with Heads of Mission

Diplomatic strategies to enhance Jamaica’s development process were discussed at a meeting between Prime Minister, the Hon. Bruce Golding and Heads of Missions, at Jamaica House, on May 28.

Addressing the diplomats, the Prime Minister thanked them for effectively representing their country and encouraged them to increase dialogue with non-traditional partners in an attempt to diversify the country’s foreign relations.

He mentioned, in particular, those countries whose economies are now poised to be market leaders.

“If our economy is to be impacted by external forces, we need to strategically align our economy to those countries that are now the growth centres of the world, such as China, India and Brazil,” the Prime Minister said.

Stating that increased economic activity, particularly in investments and trade, was the desired outcome of Jamaica’s diplomatic activities, Mr. Golding spoke of increased engagement with South America, particularly Brazil, where Jamaica will be establishing an Embassy soon.

The Prime Minister encouraged the diplomats to continue informing their host countries of investment and development opportunities in Jamaica.

Apart from the focus on investment and trade, other areas of discussion included Jamaica 50, deportation and other matters.

During their one week of activities, the Heads of Mission have also met with Minister of Youth Sports and Culture, the Hon. Olivia Grange;  Minister of Finance,  Hon. Audley Shaw; Minister of National Security, Senator the Hon. Dwight Nelson; Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett; and the new Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Hon. Christopher Tufton.
