The Full Story

The Old Shoe Market located on the corner of St. James and Strand Streets in Montego Bay is to be transformed into a modern arcade at a cost of some $100 million.

Mayor of Montego Bay and Chairman of the St. James Municipal Corporation, Councillor Homer Davis, said that ground will be broken early 2019 for the development, which will benefit small business operators.

He said that funding for the undertaking will come from the sale of properties owned by the St. James Municipal Corporation as well as collection of building fees.

The Mayor was speaking at a town hall meeting held at Closed Harbour Beach in Montego Bay, St. James, on November 22.

Meanwhile, the Mayor said that the Municipal Corporation will, in short order, sign off on the sale of land at Bogue Industrial Estate amounting to some $500 million.

“The proceeds from this sale will be used to carry out major rehabilitation work on the Charles Gordon Market, which was constructed some 50 years ago. We will bring this market to First-World standard,” he said.
