The Full Story

Director General at the National Commission on Science and Technology (NCST), Professor Errol Morrison, says development of nutraceuticals could become the economic saviour for Jamaica.

He said ginger, marijuana and the ball moss offer significant potential for product research and development, which could bring major earnings for the country.

“If we were to take any one of the three nutraceuticals, study it properly, and come up with a product, this could make us at least 10 billion or more,” Professor Morrison said.

He was addressing the launch of Science and Technology Month on October 26 at the Scientific Research Council (SRC).

Nutraceuticals describe any product derived from food sources that provide health benefits and have basic nutritional value.

Professor Morrison said development of neutraceuticals will require some level of investment, but noted that the results would be worth the money spent.

“We have the ideas and the potential, so with added resources through the Scientific Research Council (SRC) and other research and development institutions, along with some good research, this could make a tremendous difference in our coffers,” he noted.
