NYS Begs More School Shoes for Needy Students

The National Youth Service (NYS) is encouraging more persons to donate new pairs of shoes as part of its annual volunteer initiative.

Launched in July, the NYS shoe drive aims to assist children preparing for the new school term beginning in September.

“We have been receiving positive responses from the general public and corporate companies, but there is still a great need for persons to contribute in order for us to adequately provide for those in need,” said Placement Services Coordinator, Lancelot McCalla, in an interview with JIS News.

With a deadline set for August 26, the NYS is hoping to collect approximately 2,000 pairs of black or brown school shoes.

The shoes that have been collected will be donated to the most needy homes and communities across the island.

“Parish offices are responsible for identifying children within their respective parishes who will benefit from this project,” said Mr. McCalla.

Last year’s initiative took the form of a book drive. These projects are aligned to the NYS’s core value of volunteerism.
