The Honourable Mrs. Justice Zaila McCalla OJ, Chief Justice of Jamaica, was on Tuesday February 9, 2016, conferred with the prestigious title of Honourary Bencher of the Middle Temple Inn in London, England.
Middle Temple has a long and distinguished history; and is one of four Inns of Court in London, which has the exclusive right to call students to the Bar. Chief Justice McCalla was nominated and subsequently elected to serve the Inn in recognition of her contribution to the law in Jamaica.
Chief Justice McCalla was admitted to the Jamaican Bar in 1976 and has served in numerous capacities including Clerk of the Courts, Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Senior Resident Magistrate, Puisne Judge and Judge of Appeal before being appointed Jamaica’s first female Chief Justice in June 2007.
She joins an elite and outstanding group of individuals who are also members of the Middle Temple Inn. They include the Rt. Honourable David Cameron, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Eric Holder Jr., Attorney general of United States of America, 2009-2015, and fellow Chief Justice of Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Justice Ivor Archie.
Middle Temple currently has over 375 ordinary Benchers and 80 senior Benchers who are responsible for its governance.
