The Full Story

Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Richard Vernon, is reporting that 84 persons are being accommodated in emergency shelters across St. James.

He told JIS News that 50 are tourists who were evacuated from the Zoetry Hotel in Rose Hall.

They are being housed at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, which serves as the tourism shelter.

Councillor Vernon said the remaining 34 persons are being accommodated at 13 shelters, noting that “most of them are elderly persons.” He added that there are about three children and possibly a small number of homeless persons.

The shelters are being actively monitored by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), the public health specialist from St. James Public Health Services, and the Poor Relief team from the St. James Municipal Corporation.

Meanwhile, Councillor Vernon told JIS News that there were two incidents of fallen trees in Ramble Hill and John’s Hall, which have been cleared.

“The road is now accessible and persons delivering essential services or for emergency purposes may utilise them,” he said.

Mayor Vernon also advised that, currently, “there are no blocked roads”, adding that “we are in a stable condition, in terms of the weather being [not as bad as] we [were] anticipating; things are under control and being managed.”
