500 Summer Workers To Do Hurricane Beryl Damage Assessment (JIS)

KINGSTON, July 18 (JIS):

Approximately 500 young people who are engaged in the Youth Summer Employment Programme (YSEP) will be assigned to do Hurricane Beryl damage assessment in communities islandwide.

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, in a statement in the House of Representatives on July 16, said that the youth workers will play an integral role in the rapid conclusion of the damage assessment.

“There is much data collection and damage assessment work being conducted across Jamaica. Given our commitment to fast-track these assessments, the Government, through the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, has provided 200 summer workers… to assist the Ministry of Labour and Social Security in its efforts to assist those affected in a timely manner,” he said, noting that the additional 300 summer workers will be assigned to the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).

They will be in the field beginning Monday, July 22, the Prime Minister told the House.
