The Full Story

The Ministry of Finance and the Public Service will continue work under the Pilot Programme for Climate Resilience (PPCR) Phase II during the new financial year, through a $433.3-million budgetary allocation.

This is contained in the 2022/23 Estimates of Expenditure, which were tabled in the House of Representatives on February 10 by Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Dr. the Hon. Nigel Clarke.

The project, which initially ran from April 2013 to September 2015 and has since been extended, aims to improve the quality and use of climate-related data for effective planning and action at the local and national levels.

Achievements up to December 2021 include installation of 35 automatic water stations by the Meteorological Service of Jamaica to capture rainfall data; provision of 32 soil moisture probes and development and installation of a real-time hydro-met system by the Water Resources Authority; and putting in place a sea-level tide gauge at the Montego Bay pier.

The money allocated for 2022/23 will be used to complete 10 climate-smart interventions for the Ministry of Health and Wellness, and the development of early warning messages for six vulnerable groups.

The project, which has been extended to August 2022, is being financed by the World Bank.
