The exciting 2024 Public Sector Debate Competition gets under way on Tuesday, June 4, with the preliminary round of matches.

Round One will take place over two days (June 4 and 5) and will include six matches on Day 1 and seven on Day 2.

All matches will be streamed live via the Transformation Implementation Unit (TIU) Facebook and YouTube channel.

The first two matches will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will see the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce (MIIC) going up against the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, while the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development will be facing the Ministry of National Security.

The teams will debate the moot ‘Be it resolved that the public sector should drastically change its culture’, and ‘Be it resolved that decisions relating to the use of mobile phones in schools should be determined exclusively by school administrators’, respectively.

At 11:35 a.m. another two set of matches will be played, the first being the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade against the Real Estate Board.

They will be debating the moot, ‘Be it resolved that Jamaica should have regional municipal corporations instead of the current system’.

The other matchup will be the Ministry of Justice and the Southern Regional Health Authority, debating the moot ‘Be it resolved that public utilities (water, electricity, garbage collection, etc.) should be completely privatised’.

The final set of matches on Day 1 will get under way at 2:00 p.m. and will see last year’s second-place team, the Jamaica Information Service, competing against the Jamaica National Heritage Trust.

They will debate the moot ‘Be it resolved that legislation should be passed to cap bank fees and charges in Jamaica’.

Agro-Invest Corporation will, at the same time, go up against the Statistical Institute of Jamaica and they will debate the moot, ‘Be it resolved that media entities should publicly declare their political allegiance’.

Details on Day 2 of Round One and other subsequent rounds are available via the TIU’s social media platforms.

The competition, which is in its third year, aims to provide a platform for government officers to share their views and ignite a spirit of engagement to make public-sector transformation more inclusive.

A total of 26 teams are participating in this year’s competition and are vying for prizes totalling $3.5 million.

The Public Sector Debate Competition is spearheaded by the TIU, in partnership with the Jamaican Association for Debating and Empowerment Limited (JADE).
