The Full Story

A youth innovation challenge will be a key feature of the programmed activities for the 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference, slated for June 16-19 at the Montego Bay Conference Centre in St. James.

The challenge, which was conceptualised by the Global Jamaica Diaspora Youth Council (GJDYC), aims to catalyse the spirit of innovation among young people across the Diaspora through ideas and projects in support of the island’s development.

The GJDYC, which was established in March 2020, is a youth-led initiative that aims to increase second, third and fourth generation Diasporans’ affinity and connection with Jamaica.

Speaking during Friday’s (April 26) virtual satellite Conference launch in Trinidad and Tobago, Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Hon. Alando Terrelonge, extended an invitation to young leaders of Jamaican descent to present innovative ideas during the upcoming event.

“Let me challenge you, our young Diasporans, to come to the Conference, present your ideas, perspectives in these critical discussions, and showcase your innovations across various events,” he said, adding that the top three projects will be presented.

“Help us, in Jamaica, to share the outcomes for actions to assist in building the Jamaica that you want to see, the Jamaica that you wish to return to when you retire as well,” the State Minister added.

Mr. Terrelonge said the Conference’s programme will place an emphasis on youth involvement and empowerment during sessions and panel discussions across the three days.

Noting that nationals in the region are also being targeted, Mr. Terrelonge urged Jamaicans in the Diaspora communities as well as those at home to register and participate in the Conference.

He said the Diaspora Secretariat has noted a significant level of interest being shown by persons overseas.

“We have seen a great interest in registration. Persons want to return home to Jamaica. Persons want to make their contribution. Persons want to hear more about the investment opportunities, and we look forward to welcoming our Caribbean brothers and sisters to the Conference,” he said.

Persons registering online can visit the Ministry’s Evenbrite website: www.diasporaconferenceja.evenbrite.com.

The platform provides additional information, such as hotel accommodation and early bird prices for registrants.

“We have secured discounted rates for your convenience. So visit our Ministry’s website, our social media pages or use your phone to scan the QR Code on the Diaspora flyers for easy access,” Mr. Terrelonge added.

The Conference will be held under the theme: ‘United for Jamaica’s Transformation: Fostering Peace, Productivity and Youth Empowerment’.
