WPM Waste Management Limited Heightens Garbage Collection in Downtown Montego Bay

WPM Waste Management Limited has heightened its collection schedule to tackle the increased volume of debris accumulating in downtown Montego Bay.
“This area has a lot of people [either engaged in commercial activities or] travelling through [Montego Bay] daily, and because of that it generates a lot of waste. [So], we have a night shift [crew] that [cleans] the major areas and all the major skips within the space,” Regional Operations Manager, Dramaine Jones, informs.
“On average, from the [Charles Gordon] market nightly, we take about a half a truck load of waste. So we do two trips using a big truck nightly and that is just to ensure that we don’t have that excess in the morning. Then we have three trucks doing six trips daily… [that is] two big trucks [and] one small truck, cleaning downtown Montego Bay daily,” he added.
Mr. Jones indicated, however, that “there are several [other] streets where, at least every two days, [waste] is collected”.
He was speaking with JIS News following a recent operation during which the agency eradicated a dumpsite in Clark’s Town, Trelawny, and beautified the area.
Mr. Jones said WPM continues to push the messages of recycling and composting to encourage persons to effectively deal with their waste.
“So, if persons start to compost as well as recycle plastics, what it means now is that about 60 to 65 per cent of the waste disappears. So what would be left would be that little bit for us to collect and take to disposal sites,” he pointed out.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jones advised that the organisation’s recently launched podcast, ‘Manage Yuh Waste Fi Di Summa’, has been doing well.
“Season one is out now, and we are trying to get the word [about proper waste disposal] out there… so persons understand what it is that you can do to help… in a more holistic way. So, it’s not just the sanitation officers going around and taking up the garbage, but ‘how can I help’ as a citizen,” he emphasised.
Persons may listen to the podcast on YouTube.com and Soundcloud.com.
During the activity in Clark’s Town, several NSWMA workers, as well as community members, cleaned and placed ‘no dumping’ signs at the former dumpsite.
