Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Shahine Robinson, says work is ongoing to modernise the operations of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) in order to enhance its viability, efficiency and service delivery.
She was making her contribution to the 2016/17 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on June 28.
She said that new software is being introduced to reduce application processing time. She added that the roll-out of the system has begun and will be completed this financial year.
In addition, work to modernise payment modalities for local and overseas-based pensioners has commenced.
Mrs. Robinson informed that a reform committee is examining recommendations from the most recent actuarial review of the scheme and the first response is expected by the third quarter of this fiscal year.
The reform committee is comprised of representatives of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the Ministry of Finance and Public Service.
