The Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation (WCJF) has commenced the restructuring of the delivery of its programmes.
This was disclosed by Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Babsy Grange, during her contribution to the 2016/17 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on July 12.
She said the restructuring aims to broaden the scope of the Foundation’s mandate of placing teenage mothers on equal footing with other adolescents to complete their education and become gainfully employed.
“The Foundation has a campaign to enroll 1,400 adolescent mothers into the programme and reintegrate 600 adolescent mothers into the formal school system, or place them in other institutions of learning,” Ms. Grange said.
The Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation Programme for Adolescent Mothers was established in 1978 in response to the high level of teenage pregnancy experienced by the country.
The Programme is mandated to assist girls 17 years and under, who have dropped out of school due to a pregnancy.
They are allowed to continue their education at the Women’s Centres nearest to them for at least one term, and are subsequently returned to the formal school system after the birth of their babies.
