UK High Commissioner Celebrates Birthday with Scholarship Awards

In celebration of her birthday this year, Jamaica’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Her Excellency Aloun Assamba, has awarded scholarships, valued at $1.2 million to students at three of the high schools she attended.

The beneficiary institutions are: Ferncourt High School, St Ann; Merle Grove High School, St. Andrew; and Convent of Mercy (Alpha), Kingston.

Two sixth form students from each of the institution will receive awards of $200,000 apiece.

Ms. Assamba, who made symbolic presentations to the schools’ principals, during Tuesday’s (June 16) education session of the 2015 Jamaica Diaspora Conference in Montego Bay, said funding for the scholarships was contributed by friends, to whom she has expressed gratitude.

“I asked my friends to contribute money to a scholarship fund that I thought would have been appropriate…and they did,” she said. The education session was held under the theme: ‘Jamaica and the Diaspora Partnering for Education Transformation.
